Rule Lesson: Deal with Junk Mail

The Entourage Junk Mail Filter does not learn, but it updated occasionally with the Office updaters. You need to set your filter. I suggest High to start. After you fine tune your Address Book, you might want to use "Exclusive."

Step 1: If it's in your Junk folder and it's good mail, select "This is not junk" and select the best option. Adding contacts to your Address Book is the key to dealing with your messages. The JMF never assigns messages from contacts in your Address Book to the Junk category.

or click on the Not Junk icon

Step 2: Create additional junk rules if necessary. The only one I suggest is Junk Mail where "From is Me." If you send mail to yourself it won't get caught by the Junk Mail Filter. If you really must use other rules, see these examples.

Continue with the lesson, by creating custom rules.

Tips

  • Learn this shortcut: Command-Option-C.... This adds the contact to the Address Book. Assign a category before you save.
  • Nuke junk mail after you check. Nuke Messages will bypass sending the message to the deleted items folder then deleting again. Download Nuke Messages. Learn more about AppleScripts
  • The Entourage Junk Mail Filter does not learn. If you find the Entourage spam filter lacking, check out Spamsieve. Spamsieve adds powerful Bayesian spam filtering to popular e-mail clients. Named “Software of the Year” by Macworld magazine.
  • Gmail's junk filter is one of the best. You can forward your email through a Gmail account and never have to download spam to your computer.
