Setup Assistant Errors
Office 2008

  • Office Setup Assistant opens when I try to open an Office 2008 application (loops). Options:
    1. To resolve this issue, please move the following files to the trash
    2. If you have multiple copies of Office installed
    3. Remove the Microsoft User Data folder
    4. Deleting the Entourage Preference Files in the Microsoft Folder in the User Library Preferences solves the problem for some users.
    5. Invalid Product Key after updating to SP2

If you are having problems with the Setup Assistant failing, you can check to see if you have a proper install.

Some users have found it easier to re-install Office than try and find the problem. Steps to re-install

Option 1) To resolve this issue, please move the following files to the Trash:

    • /Users/username/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2008/Microsoft Office 2008 settings.plist
    • /Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Office/OfficePID.plist

After you complete these steps, open any Office application, and then use the product key that is included with your original installation disk to complete the installation. The product key is located on the back of the Office 2008 for Mac DVD sleeve or on the back of the Install Guide.

    Microsoft Office 2008 settings.plist location:

    OfficePID.plist location:

Option 2) If you have multiple copies of office, click on the Office Assistant on the Dock, select "Show in Finder." Go to the location in the Finder, quit the Assistant, and then delete the plist in the Office folder where you found the Assistant.

Option 3) Remove or Add the Microsoft User Data folder. The Setup Assistant could be blocked when creating an Office Identities folder in the Microsoft User Data folder in the Documents folder.

One user found he had no Microsoft User Data folder. Creating a new folder solved the blocked Setup Assistant. There was also an issue with permissions. You must have admin priviledges to install Office.

There was no Microsoft User Data folder in my Documents folder. I tried creating one, but this didn't work. I created the folder on my desktop, and moved it to my Documents folder. It gave a warning and I had to enter my password. After that the folder Microsoft User Data was in my Documents folder. After this, I tried launching an Office 2008 application, and I got the setup assistant again. This time pressing continue did work, so I could finish the setup procedure, and now I can use all my Office applications!

If you have a Microsoft User Data folder, try moving it to the desktop and see if the Setup Assistant will continue. You can always move back your Identity folder and other files like scripts after the install.
